Special Enrollment

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if in the past 60 days you or anyone in your household:
  • Got married. Pick a plan by the last day of the month and your coverage can start the first day of the next month.
  • Had a baby, adopted a child, or placed a child for foster care. Your coverage can start the day of the event — even if you enroll in the plan up to 60 days afterward.
  • Got divorced or legally separated and lost health insurance. Divorce or legal separation without losing coverage doesn’t qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Died. You’ll qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if someone on your Marketplace plan dies which causes you to lose your current health plan.
  • Changes in residence
  • Loss of health coverage

What is the Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment?

The ACA, also known as Obamacare, has a time each year called open enrollment. During this time, people can compare different health plans and choose one that best meets their needs. The open enrollment period happens from November 1 to January 15. Depending on the state, people may use HealthCare.gov or their own exchange to enroll, so the enrollment period may be different.

When is open enrollment for my state?

Open enrollment for health insurance in most states will happen from November 1, 2023 to January 15, 2024. Some states have different schedules. Check the deadlines for your state here.

Who is eligible for Marketplace enrollment?

To be able to enroll on the ACA’s Marketplace:

  • You must live in the United States.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or national or be lawfully present.
  • You must not be incarcerated.
  • You can not be enrolled in Medicare coverage.

Who can get money help to buy health insurance from the Marketplace?

But eligibility for financial assistance is different. Being eligible to enroll in the Marketplace is not the same as being eligible for financial assistance. In short, the income-based subsidies available through the Marketplace/exchange are reserved for people who aren’t eligible for Medicaid, zero-premium Medicare Part A, or coverage offered by an employer that’s deemed affordable and comprehensive.
